“You’re going to pay a price for every bloody thing you do and everything you don’t do. You don’t get to choose to not pay a price. You get to choose which poison you’re going to take.”
-Jordan Peterson
The Cost of Addiction
Addiction was never free. It took everything from me time, health, relationships, and most of all, my sense of self. Every choice to drink came with a cost: the mornings waking up in regret, the people I hurt, the opportunities I let slip away. At the time, it felt easier to stay numb than to face my reality, but the truth was, I was still paying a price. The deeper I fell, the heavier that price became.
At my lowest, I was in active liver failure, lying alone in a hospital bed. Even then, I reached for the bottle as soon as I could. Addiction demands a toll, and if you don’t stop, it keeps taking your health, your dignity, your life. The scariest part was realizing that even if I wanted to change, I couldn’t escape the struggle. Sobriety had its own cost.
The Cost of Recovery
Choosing recovery didn’t mean the struggle ended it meant I had to fight a different battle. Detox was brutal. Rehab was humbling. I had to face everything I had run from. There were moments when I wondered if it was worth it, moments when I thought the weight of sobriety was too much to carry. But the difference was, this struggle led somewhere.
In recovery, I paid the price of discipline instead of destruction. Instead of losing myself, I found strength. Instead of watching my life fall apart, I rebuilt it piece by piece. I earned back my self-respect, my trust, and my future. It wasn’t easy, but it was worth every ounce of pain, every difficult choice, every step forward.
Choosing Your Struggle
Jordan Peterson was right there’s no escaping the cost of life. You either pay for staying the same, or you pay for the effort it takes to change. The price of addiction is suffering without purpose, a slow decline into nothing. The cost of recovery is hard work, but it leads to something greater. I had to ask myself: which price was worth paying?
For me, the answer became clear. I chose the struggle that led to life instead of death. And every day, I make that choice again.
This post is for anyone standing at the crossroads, wondering if it’s worth it. It is. You don’t get to avoid struggle, but you do get to choose which fight to take on. So choose the one that gives you back your life.
