At FaceThyFear, we’re inspired by individuals who push past their limits and embrace life’s adventures. Today, we’re sharing the story of Ryan Ice—a man whose love for the outdoors and life’s simple pleasures reminds us all to face our fears and find joy in exploration.

I met Ryan during my time in Savannah, Georgia, while I was being introduced to the HVAC field. From the moment we started working together, it was clear that Ryan had a unique story to tell. Originally from Alaska, Ryan recently moved to the Kentucky/West Virginia area. He’s known for his laid-back attitude, adventurous spirit, and the classic country music he plays on his Bluetooth speaker—earning him the nickname “Cowboy.”

Despite our different backgrounds, Ryan and I connected quickly. What we shared brought us closer, and what we didn’t led to plenty of interesting conversations and good laughs. His story is one of resilience, adventure, and finding peace in the great outdoors.

Here’s what Ryan had to share about his travels, love for nature, and the lessons he’s learned along the way:

Q: Ryan, what’s it like moving from Alaska to Kentucky/West Virginia? That’s a big change!

Ryan: “It’s definitely different. Alaska is beautiful in a rugged, untamed way, but there’s something special about the Appalachian region. The mountains here have a kind of quiet, rolling charm. It’s like trading one kind of beauty for another, but both feel like home in their own way. I do miss the vastness of Alaska sometimes, though.”

Q: You’re an avid hiker and explorer. What draws you to nature?

Ryan: “For me, it’s the peace of it all. When you’re out there on a trail, it’s just you and the world. No distractions, no noise—just the sound of your boots on the ground and the wind in the trees. It clears your mind in a way nothing else can. Plus, there’s something humbling about being surrounded by mountains or standing next to a river that’s been flowing for centuries.”

Q: Any favorite places you’ve hiked or visited?

Ryan: “There are so many, but Alaska’s Denali National Park will always have a special place in my heart. The sheer scale of it is incredible. Since moving, I’ve been exploring the Appalachian Trail little by little. The New River Gorge in West Virginia is another spot I’ve fallen in love with recently. It’s a great mix of hiking and just breathtaking views.”

Q: What do you listen to on your hikes? I’ve heard about the country music on your Bluetooth speaker!

Ryan: [Laughs] “Yeah, I’m that guy. It’s usually classic country—George Strait, Johnny Cash, stuff like that. But I’ll mix it up with some bluegrass or folk depending on the vibe of the day. Music has a way of grounding me and making the experience even better.”

Q: Any advice for someone looking to get into hiking or exploring nature?

Ryan: “Start simple. You don’t have to climb a mountain on your first day. Go for a walk in a local park or hit a trail that’s rated easy. Build up from there. And always be prepared—water, snacks, and a good pair of boots make all the difference. But most importantly, just go. Don’t overthink it. The first step is the hardest, but it’s worth it.”

Q: Lastly, what’s one thing you’ve learned from your travels that sticks with you?

Ryan: “That the world’s a lot bigger and more beautiful than you realize when you’re stuck in one place. Traveling and being in nature remind you that you’re part of something much larger. It’s a good way to put life in perspective and find peace with whatever you’re going through.”

Ryan’s story is a reminder that adventure doesn’t have to mean going to the farthest corners of the world—it’s about exploring what’s around you, appreciating the beauty in every moment, and connecting with the world on your own terms.
