Rooted in Growth: Turning Small Steps into Something Bigger

The sun was shining, 76 degrees, the kind of day that makes you want to roll the windows down and just cruise. Scotty, my Honda Element, was ready to hit the road.

I had just set up my first garden center at home and needed supplies to bring it to life. That’s when I found Economy Feed & Seed, just four minutes from my house. I had never been there before, but something about it felt right.
Walking in, I took my time, scanning through the rows of vegetables, herbs, and flowers, thinking about how all of this would come together.

I picked up:
•A full flat of plants ( Mix & Match) – a combination of vegetables and flowers, including Dahlias because my girlfriend’s name is Dahlia, and if I’m growing anything, it only makes sense to grow something for her, too.
• German Johnson heirloom tomatoes & Park’s Whopper tomatoes – strong, steady growers.
• Chocolate Beauty bell peppers – something different, something unique.
• Peppermint & trailing rosemary – for flavor, for healing, for something fresh.

Of course, plants don’t just grow on their own. The foundation matters.
So, I grabbed:
• A 50-quart bag of premium potting mix – because healthy roots start with good soil.
•Fertilizer – because even the strongest plants need the right nutrients to thrive.
• A trowel – nothing fancy, just a simple tool that makes all the difference.
• Sweet Kandy Korn & Mammoth Gray Sunflower seeds – because corn teaches patience, and sunflowers remind me to keep reaching higher.

With everything packed into Scotty, I sat for a second, looking around. New store. New garden. New process. I didn’t expect it, but this trip felt like a first step toward something bigger.
Laying the Foundation—One Step at a Time

A few days before this trip, I found something else to help bring it all together.
I was finishing up at work, heading over to Number 9, my work van, when I spotted them—two small wooden pallets, sitting in the trash.
A coworker saw me looking and offered me a bigger pallet, but I shook my head. Nah, these two are perfect.
And they were.
Most people wouldn’t have thought twice. Just some old scrap wood, tossed aside, forgotten. But I saw something else.
A mini garden center—a place to organize my plants, give them structure, and turn this whole setup into something more.
It’s funny how things line up. One day, you find the materials. The next, you gather the supplies. Then, suddenly, you’re building something real.
I loaded the pallets into Number 9, knowing that in a few days, they’d have a new purpose.
Growth Starts Before You See It
This whole process started even earlier than the pallets.

Back on February 23, I prepped pepper, okra, and bean seeds, placing them in ziplock bags to germinate. No soil yet—just time, warmth, and patience.

And today? I moved them into trays, finally ready for their next step.

It’s a simple process, but one that means something bigger: growth takes time. The best things start small.
If You’ve Been Thinking About Growing Something, Start Now.
You don’t need a big yard to start.
• Got a windowsill? Grow some herbs.
• Got a porch? A couple of pots of tomatoes or peppers can thrive there.
• Got a little extra space outside? You don’t need much to grow food for yourself.
It’s not just about the plants. It’s about learning patience, trusting the process, and building something with your own hands.
And if you’re waiting for the “perfect” time? Don’t.

Growth doesn’t wait. You just have to start.
This is just the beginning. What we plant today will grow tomorrow.
If you can see it, then you can reach it.
